When and Where is the World Chess Championship 2024?

The World Chess Championship 2024 will be held at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore from November 25 to December 13, 2024.

Singapore was one of the three destinations that bid to host the historic championship this year and was chosen by Emil Sutovsky, the FIDE CEO, over Chennai, India, and New Dehli, India.

Who is the Defending Champion?

Ding Liren will return as the defending champion after winning the 2023 match against Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Unfortunately, Ding might be a little rusty this year, as he missed various professional tournaments due to struggling with depression and fatigue. For instance, he was noticeably absent on the 2024 Grand Chess Tour.

However, he has since returned to the game and is eager to defend his title at the upcoming championship.

He will likely be eager to prove critics wrong, as he has experienced poor performances at various chess events since the start of 2024.

Following his performances at Norway Chess, the Tata Steel Masters, and Freestyle Chess, his world ranking dropped from world number three to 21.

Who is the Challenger?

Ding Liren will go up against Gukesh Dommaraju at the 2024 World Chess Championships at the end of the year.

He was chosen as Liren’s challenger after defeating his competition at the Candidates Tournament 2024 in April 2024 and beating Anish Giri at the Chennai Grand Masters.

Due to Liren’s recent poor performance, Dommaraju is the current favorite to win the championship.

Ian Nepomniachtchi, who lost at the event last year, recently commented on Fabiano Caruana’s podcast that Ding Liren would likely have been a clear favorite if he’d played at peak form this year.

How Many Games Will They Play?

Ding Liren and Gukesh Dommaraju must play a best of 14 games to win the World Chess Championship 2024. The player who achieves a minimum score of 7 ½ will likely win the prestigious event.

If they achieve an equal score after playing the 14 games, they will play tiebreak games with quicker time controls.

How Much Will the Winner Receive?

The World Chess Championship 2024 has an allocated prize fund of US$2.5 million. Players will receive $200,000 per winning game, which includes forfeits. The remaining sum will be equally split between the players.

If a tiebreak is needed, the winning player will walk away with $1.3 million, and the losing opponent will receive $1.2 million.
