When Is The Winner Announced?
In 2025, the winner of the World Car of the Year Award 2025 is due to be announced on April 16 at the New York International Auto Show.
Which Cars Are Competing?
It’s odd to think that cars are competing for a title, but in the run-up to the announcement in April, there have been three finalists, according to MSN.
The finalists are:
- The BMX X3
- The Hyundai Inster
- Kia EV3
Kia, as a brand, seems to be popular in car award shows. The winner of the 2025 award will follow the 2024 World Car of the Year Award, which was won by the Kia EV9.
The Kia EV3 has also won the UK Car of the Year 2025, and in the 2024 UK Car of The Year show, the Kia EV9 won. So, they are doing something right at Kia!
Eligibility Criteria
According to the official website of the award, the eligibility for the World Car of the Year 2025 states that vehicles that are competing must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units per year. They must be priced below the luxury car level in the primary market and must be on sale in at least two major markets, which include China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, and the USA on at least two separate continents within the period January 1, 2024, and March 30, 2025.
How is the Winner Chosen?
The award has a selection of jurors composed of 102 international automotive journalists from 30 countries. These jurors vote with a secret ballot, and while a lot of driving is involved, they are all required to drive each car nominated at least once to assess its steering and other features.

Of course, as this is an award show, there are other categories of cars that must be chosen from. In 2025, some of these include:

Aside from the Kia brand being the 2024 winner of both this and the UK Car Show Award, are there any other trends among previous winners? 2023 saw a triple win for Hyundai, winning the World Car of the Year, the World Electric Vehicle, and the World Car Design of the Year.
