It started back with the Wizard of Oz, and now it has morphed into a worldwide phenomenon.
With Broadway shows, Halloween costumes and an epic soundtrack to boot, Wicked is one of the most successful spin-off franchises ever to grace the stage. So, it stands to reason that it would be made into a movie. It is due to be released in 2024, following two decades as one of the most enduring musicals in the United States and the UK.
What To Expect From Wicked
The Wicked movie is set to be released in cinemas on November 27, 2024. However, this has been delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as issues in 2023 with the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The story is set to follow a young woman called Elphaba, who is misunderstood in the Land of Oz due to her green skin and forms a friendship with Glinda. Fans of the original will remember her, as she will later go on to become the good witch.
Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, the relationship soon reaches a crossroads, and their lives begin to take very different paths.
As an interesting side note, Wicked Part 2 is stated to already have its release date with November 26, 2025 being pegged but this may change.

Who Has Been Cast In the Wicked Movie?
So, who will be playing the roles of Elphaba and Glinda? Cynthia Ervio is set to play Elphaba, Ariana Grande is due to be Glinda, and there is the somewhat epic announcement of none other than Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz! What a line-up!
Anticipation of Wicked Movie
The marketing for this movie began in 2023, with the first look pictures of the film being released via social media. The first trailer of the film premiered during the Super Bowl in 2024, and new footage was seen at CinemaCon in April. Costumes and props were also displayed in the lobby, so there has been an interesting build-up, with the familiar green and black making up the color scheme.
Are fans excited? In a word, yes, but there is a lot of pressure on this movie; will it do as well as the stage show? Or will it be the next Les Misérables?

Remember in July 2023 when Barbenheimer was a thing?
There were t-shirts and posters with fused scenes of the two movies together, usually with Barbie in the foreground and an atomic bomb going off in the background. An interesting mix! A similar thing is set to happen this year with the release of Wicked, as it opens on the same weekend as Gladiator II. Many fans are therefore curious, as well as box office buffs as to which movie will do better.
