USA TikTok Ban 2025

  • May 20, 2025, USA

It was a grim day for social media lovers and social media influencers from the United States.

The day, of course, was the day that it was announced that TikTok was going to be banned. This happened in April 2024, as Congress passed a ban on the video streaming platform signed off by President Joe Biden.

As far back as 2020, Donald Trump proposed banning the app over concerns related to information that was being shared. Since January 19, 2025, the platform has been under a de jure nationwide ban, which is due to become permanent. The question is when.

If you are a fan of the social media platform or just want to know more, everything you need is right here.

History of TikTok

Tik Tok, which is known in both Hong Kong and mainland China as Douyin, was created in 2016. It allows users to submit videos, usually from three seconds to 60 minutes long. The most popular way it is used is via the TikTok app. However, it does also have a website.

Since 2016, it has become one of the world’s largest and most popular social media platforms. It uses recommendation-based algorithms to connect content creators with influencers, and in April 2020, it received over two billion mobile downloads globally. Chances are that you, or someone you know, has watched TikTok at least once, and, of course, there are the always popular TikTok dances!

Why is it Being Banned?

With its popularity, especially in the US, it is easy to become confused about why it is being banned. Did Donald Trump and Joe Biden just not like the platform?

The answer is, unfortunately, a bit more worrisome than that. As TikTok is a company headquartered in China, there have been concerns from the US Government about user data safety protections. There have also been worries about the influence of operations by the government of the People’s Republic of China.

TikTok Executives Deal

Fans of the platform may be happy to learn that the executives at TikTok have been aiming to draw up a deal with the now President Donald Trump.

At the time of writing, in less than a month, TikTok will need to have new owners, be banned, or receive a reprieve, which will allow it to continue temporary operation in the United States.

Current President Donald Trump has tasked Vice President JD Vance to oversee the negotiations with the executives of TikTok. According to NBC News, he has stated that it is highly likely that there will be an outcome that ticks all the boxes. More likely than a ban, a distinct American TikTok will be created, which will alleviate government concerns over safety, also suggesting that this framework is likely to already be being created.

Joe Biden originally aimed to have TikTok bought by an American company or face the ban. This option seems to leave room for the original owners to hold on to the platform, simply needing to conform to set standards under the new administration.

Countries Where TikTok is Banned

It should be noted that while the ban of TikTok in the US is unlikely, the app has already been banned in Afghanistan and India, with other countries banning the app on federal devices, such as Belgium and Canada. So, will the ban happen?
