Brief History of the Tour of Flanders
The Tour of Flanders has a long history, with the first race being organized back in 1913 by Karel van Wijnendaele.
The race aimed to cross two of the western provinces, and unlike more modern races, it started bright and early at 6 am. The initial race design covered a whopping 333 km and was all on road, with minimal access to cycle lanes. For the first race, which started and finished in Mariakerke, the ticket sales only covered the cost of half the prizes.
The same race in 1913 was won by Paul Deman, a 25-year-old who won the race after riding for 12 hours. The prizes in the first races came to a total of 1,100 Belgian francs, and by 1935, the fees and the bonuses had increased to 12,500 francs.
When Does the Tour of Flanders Start in 2025?
The Tour of Flanders is scheduled to start on April 6, 2025, in Bruges, specifically in the Market Square. The start of the race is scheduled for 10 am, but drivers are advised that due to the passage of cyclists through the race, on the day itself, there will be limited parking.
As with the Tour de France, there are many points throughout the race selected for viewing, which is free!
What is the Route?
Website visitbruges.com shows that the routes for both the male and female races in 2025 have some steep inclines and some other features that could make the challenge even more challenging!
Some of the notable parts of the Tour of Flanders include:
- Oude Kwaremont: This is a 2.2 km climb, which boasts an average gradient of four percent. It has a 1.6 km cobbled section, which is arduous for riders if the weather is wet.
- Paterberg: This part is only 360 m long, but it boasts a gradient that averages at 12.9 percent, with some sections having gradients that reach 20.3 percent. It also has a cobbled segment, which might be risky for riders in poor conditions.
- Koppenberg: This is a 600 m cobbled climb that has gradient points of 22 percent. It is also extremely narrow and steep, which, understandably, makes it one of the most dreaded parts of the race.
