Politics in the UK in 2025
At the time of writing, in the UK, the party in power is Labour, which is headed by Keir Starmer.
Starmer won the election in 2024, but a few months into his career as PM, a petition appeared online, as fans of the Labour Party and the opposition wanted an early General Election, as they felt Starmer had broken campaign promises.
This highlighted how unpopular Labour was, leading to the rise of parties like Reform UK, which Nigel Farage heads. With the Runcorn and Helsby by-election coming up and with Reform UK candidate Sarah Pochin standing for it, it could show how the politics of the UK may be set to change.
As for the Runcorn and Helby by-election, it is expected to take place on May 1, 2025. This comes after the MP for Runcorn and Helsby, MP Mike Amesbury, was convicted of assault.
Candidates for Runcorn and Helsby By-Election
Of course, there is more than one political party in the UK that wants to win this seat.
Labour has announced that Karen Shore will be their candidate. The Conservatives have announced that Sean Houlston will be theirs, and the Green Party has put forward Chris Copeman.
Which Political Party is Likely To Win?
Prior to the arrest and resignation of MP Mike Amesbury, the polls showed that Labour was incredibly popular in Runcorn and Helsby, with a 52.9 percent approval rating. This has since dropped to 35 percent and has been overtaken. By whom? Reform UK.
The Reform lead is now at 42 percent and has risen nine points since July 2024, so it seems likely that this party will win the Runcorn and Helsby by-election. This reflects a growing trend towards Reform UK in the country, even though another poll on YouGov displayed that one-third of Reform UK supporters feel that a change of leadership to the party would be beneficial.
