Mercury Prize 2024
- Sep 8, 2024, UK
The annual Mercury Prize 2024 will honor the best album of the year from a music act from the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The prestigious music event, once known as the Mercury Music Prize, has honored the best music since 1992 and was created by Robert Chandler and Jon Webster as a Brit Awards alternative.
Twelve nominees are chosen, but only one act will walk away with the cheque and trophy, and the award ceremony has a reputation for selecting outsiders over industry favorites.

When is the Mercury Prize 2024?
The Mercury Prize 2024 is scheduled for September. Unfortunately, the award show lost its deal with Freenow, meaning the ceremony and its live performances have been canceled this year.
It is the first time in three decades that there will be no ceremony, as the event has struggled to find a sponsor. However, the winner will likely be announced via BBC Music, the prize’s broadcast partner, but you’ll need to wait patiently for more details.
The TV and radio coverage will reportedly be supported by online and social media activity, helping to replace the annual live ceremony and performances.
Who is Eligible for the Prize?
The Mercury Prize is open to any album released by a British or Irish music act or a group with 50% British or Irish members.
Only 12 albums are shortlisted for the prestigious prize, and it is open to all music genres, including pop, grime, dance, rock, blues, jazz, folk, classical, and electronica.
Also, the albums must have had a UK release date from July 15, 2023, to July 12, 2024, to qualify for the industry-respected prize this year.
What’s the Reward?
The winner of Album of the Year will receive a £25,000 cheque and a trophy. Also, every shortlisted artist will receive a specially commissioned trophy engraved with ‘Albums of the Year.’
Who are the 2024 Nominees?
Eight of the 12 nominees for the Mercury Prize 2024 are women or feature female members this year. It equals the 2020 event for progressive gender representation.
The nominees are:
