After a four-year investigation analyzing Manchester City’s finances over nine years, the Premier League alleged on February 6, 2023, that the club had embarked on 115 breaches of its Financial Fair Play rules.
Manchester City later stated it was “surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches” and fully supported an independent commission entering the case to “impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence.”
What are the Charges Against Manchester City?
According to a statement from the Premier League, Manchester City breached its financial fair play rules that require a club to provide accurate financial information that contains a fair and true view of its financial position.
For instance, the information relates to Manchester City’s revenue, operating costs, and sponsorship revenue. The breaches reportedly took place from 2009 to 2018, which is during the period when the club won the Premier League three times.
Some of the alleged breaches reportedly related to player remuneration during the 2010/11 season and 2015/16 season, as well as manager Roberto Mancini’s remuneration during the 2009/10 season and the 2012/13 season.
To make matters worse, Manchester City was accused of not cooperating with the Premier League’s investigation when it started in 2018.
