  • Jul 18, 2025, Worldwide

Teenagers and adults from the 90s will likely remember I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), as it was one of the biggest American slasher movies of the decade.

The first installment, directed by Jim Gillespie, was loosely based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name. It follows the story of four teenage friends stalked by a killer a year after they covered up a car accident that may have killed a man.

The movie was a box office smash, grossing an impressive $125.3 million internationally. As a result, it inspired the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998), with some of the original cast members reprising their roles.

After 26 years away from the silver screen, it was recently announced I Know What You Did Last Summer 2 will arrive in movie theaters in July 2025.

What is the Release Date for I Know What You Did Last Summer 2?

Sony Pictures has announced I Know What You Did Last Summer 2 is scheduled for release in movie theaters on July 18, 2025.

What’s the Plot?

The movie’s premise hasn’t been confirmed yet. However, it will likely follow a similar format to the first two installments in the franchise.

As Sony Pictures has announced the casting of various young actors, the movie will likely center around a group of teenagers attempting to escape a murderer. Also, the friends may have committed a crime or similar that they might be attempting to hide.

Who Stars in I Know What You Did Last Summer 2?

For obvious reasons, some of the original cast members are unlikely to reprise their roles.

However, Freddie Prinze Jr., who starred in both movies, has reportedly signed on to join I Know What You Did Last Summer 2.

The absence of the film’s first director, Jim Gillespie, likely convinced Freddie Prinze Jr. to return to play Ray Bronson.

According to the 48-year-old actor, the filmmaker made his working life so toxic that he considered dropping out of the slasher films in the 90s.

When interviewed on the That Was Pretty Scary podcast, Prinze Jr. said, “I’m forever grateful to Jim for being such an asshole because I’ve never met one like that since…no other director I’ve met felt crossing those lines would be OK. I’ve been prepared for every lesser A-hole in the business.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt, who starred opposite Freddie Prinze Jr., has yet to confirm her return as Julia James, but rumor has it she is finalizing her contract.

A fresh batch of beautiful actors and actresses will join the franchise, too. For instance, the movie will feature Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sue Wonders, Outer Banks’ Madelyn Cline, Tiny Beautiful Things’ Sarah Pidgeon, Atlanta’s Tyriq Withers, and The Little Mermaid’s Jonah Hauer King.

Who Will Write and Direct the Movie?

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is expected to direct I Know What You Did Last Summer 2. She is best known for Netflix’s Do Revenge and Someone Great.

The talented filmmaker co-wrote the screenplay alongside Sam Lansky, inspired by a draft from Scrambled’s Leah McKendrick.

Is There an Official Trailer?

There currently isn’t an official trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer 2. It will likely drop closer to the movie’s release date.
