What’s the Plot?
Gladiator II will take place two decades from the first flick’s events. It follows the story of Lucious Marcus Aurelius’s grandson, who is living with his wife and child in Numidia. However, when Roman soldiers launch an invasion, Lucius is forced into slavery and has no choice but to fight as a gladiator in the Colosseum.
If Gladiator is anything to go by, audiences can expect plenty of action, gore, and unforgettable cinematography in the sequel.
Who Will Star in Gladiator II?
Gladiator II will feature a new cast. Normal People’s Paul Mescal will portray Lucius Verus. His character will fight Marcus Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal, in the Colosseum.
Other famous actors will appear in the sequel, including Oscar winner Denzel Washington, Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn, and The White Lotus’ Fred Hechinger.
Also, Connie Nielsen and Djimon Hounsou have reprised their roles as Lucilla and Juba.
Will Russell Crowe Star in Gladiator II?
Russell Crowe was reportedly set to appear in Gladiator II when Ridley Scott, David Frazoni, and John Logan agreed to return for the sequel. However, the movie’s development was paused when DreamWorks sold its rights to Paramount Pictures in 2006.
By 2018, Frazoni and Logan had dropped out of the sequel, with David Scarpa penning the script from a story he created with Peter Craig.
Also, it was announced the film would focus on Maximus’s secret son, Lucius. As a result, Mescal was cast in the lead role.
Will Gladiator II be a Box Office Hit?
Paramount Pictures will feel the pressure following the release of Gladiator II. The sequel’s budget was reportedly more than double that of Gladiator. The flick originally started with a $165 million budget but grew to an incredible $310 million.
For the movie to match the success of the original, it will need to generate a whopping $800 million at the box office. However, it will face stiff competition from Wicked: Part One, as they have the same opening weekend at the US box office.
