History of the Booker Prize

The Booker Prize began in 1969, with the first winner being P.H. Newby for his novel ‘Something to Answer For.’

Initially, the award was known as the Booker Prize for Fiction, but as time passed, it was shortened to the Booker Prize, which has a better ring to it.

There are over 600 books that have won the Booker Prize at the time of writing, with some of the more notable ones including ‘Kairo’ by Jenny Erpenbeck, ‘At Night All Blood is Black’ by David Diop, and Geetanjali Shree’s novel ‘Tomb of Sand.’

Indeed, the Booker Prize is so prestigious that literacy students from around the world are advised to read the International Booker Prize lists. The books really are that good!

Where is the Booker Prize Award Ceremony Held?

There is no set arena or hotel where this literary prize award ceremony is held.

In 2024, it was held at Old Billingsgate in London. In 2025, it is scheduled to take place at London’s Tate Modern on May 20.

What Does the Winner Receive?

The money that is awarded for winning the Booker Prize in any area was originally £5,000. In 1987, this doubled, and when the sponsorship of the Man Group took over in 2002, it was raised to £50,000. So, there is a lot to win with this award.

Also, on a note that all authors and writers will love, each of the shortlisted authors receives around £2,500 and has their submission bound into a book.

How Are The Nominees Selected?

The current method by which authors and writers are nominated is by self-submission, which means tens of thousands of entries are sent to the panel every year.

The nomination for the winner occurs via a five-person panel, which comprises journalists, actors, occasionally politicians, authors, and publishers. In 2025, the list of judges will be made up of Roddy Doyle, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kiley Reid. Roddy Doyle won the award in 1993 and has been in touch with the ceremony since then.

Each of the judges is required to read all the books that have been submitted. Then, they select a longlist of titles, which is known as the Booker Dozen. After that, they must read them again to narrow the list to six, and then, they must read them a third time to nominate the winner. That’s a lot of reading!

Where Can I Watch The Booker Prize?

There is no official broadcasting of the Booker Prize Award ceremony on any network. So, fans are advised to watch the official channel on YouTube or look for streaming options on the award’s official website.
