Politics in Australia

There is not a lot of campaigning around Australian Federal Elections, as there is usually a minimum of 33 days between the announcement of the election and the election day itself.

So, at the time of writing, the Australian Federal Election could take place on either May 3, 10, or as late as May 17, 2025. Also, another thing to note is that elections are typically held on Saturdays to help with better voter turnout.

Which of the Parties Has the Highest Approval Rating?

Now, onto the polls!

Website Political Pulse shows that the polls in early 2025 show that the opinions are tightly divided between the Labour Party and the LNP.

A poll taken on March 25, 2025, shows that 36 percent of voters approve of the Labour Party, with 31 percent in favor of the LNP. Interestingly, the remaining 13 percent are in favor of the Green Party, which shows a move towards eco-friendly policies in the Australian electorate.

Policies of the Parties

So, you may be wondering why it is such a close call? Here are some of the policies that are making it such a difficult outcome to predict.

Cost of Living

In the lead-up to the election, Australia’s government introduced many measures which seek to address the cost-of-living crisis. Treasurer Jim Chalmers has announced a budget that aims to have $1.7 billion in tax cuts, which includes reductions to the lowest tax bracket. The investment is also aiming to put more money into public healthcare, as well as education and investing in green metals.

Of course, this has been criticized, primarily by opposition leader Peter Dutton, who has claimed he feels such measures are an election bribe. Not pulling any punches there!

Environment and Defence

Historically, there has been something of a right-wing leaning in Australian politics related to the environment but this seems to be changing towards creating a greener economy. There are many policies aimed at the environment, and, indeed, it has been a sticking point for voters, who have requested more information on political incentives for the environment.  At the time of writing, there is very little information available on what either of the leading parties aim to do.
