French Politics in a Nutshell
First things first, France has both a President and a Prime Minister.
This seems confusing on the face of it, but simplified, the President of France is directly elected by the people and is the head of state. The Prime Minister is chosen by the President and is the head of the government, overseeing the daily administrations. So, France has a semi-presidential system, with the power being shared between the two offices.
Now that that is out of the way, what do the politics in France look like? At present, the president of France is Emmanuel Macron, who was voted into office in 2017 and was re-elected in 2022. He is representing the Renaissance party, and, like the president in the USA, any president can only serve for two terms, even though this was only bought in as recently as 2008.
Even though the majority of the French electorate highly liked Macron, it is not so clear-cut as to whether a member of the Renaissance party will replace him.
Which Party is The Most Likely to Win?
The website European Conservative states that a poll on who was likely to replace Macron was held and the results pointed firmly to Marine Le Pen. She is predicted to win in the second round of the 2027 presidential election, and support for National Rally, or the Rassemblement National (RN), is at an all-time high.
This could be surprising to some voters as the current party, the Renaissance, is considered to be liberal with centrist or centrist right leanings, whereas the National Rally is noted to have far-right leanings.
Keeping Tabs on the French Political Scene
Many parties are aiming to get into the French Presidential office, such as the Reconquete, Horizons, The Republicans and the Democratic Movement.
So, if you want to keep tabs on their popularity and assess polls, it is wise to look at each individual party’s official pages, though you may need a VPN based on where you live. It is also worth following the official X pages of the parties and keeping an eye on www.politico.eu for updates.
Who Can Vote in the French Presidential Election?
To vote in the French presidential election, voters have to be 18 years of age or older at the time of the first round and have to be registered to vote.
The first round of votes eliminates any parties from the second round who did not get 12.5% of votes from locally registered voters. In the second round, it is between a set of two, three or even four candidates, with the candidate who scores the highest winning.
In the 2027 election, no dates have been released, but the first round is scheduled to occur in early 2027.
