Who are the Nominees for This Year’s Award?
The nominees for the 2024 RTE Sports Person of the Year Award have yet to be announced. However, various athletes are widely believed to be in contention for a nomination, but only one can walk away with the sought-after title.
Many of Ireland’s gold medal-winning Olympians are likely to receive a nomination at the prestigious awards ceremony this December.
For instance, Irish swimmer Daniel Wiffen is tipped to win the award, as he earned a gold medal for Ireland for the 800m freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a bronze medal for the 1500m freestyle. Plus, he won two gold medals for Ireland at the 2024 World Championships in Doha.
Other Irish Olympians are expected to receive a nomination. For example, Paul O’Donovan earned a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and was later voted “Ireland’s greatest-ever Olympian.” Also, he set a record on the 200m ergometer at the 2024 Irish Indoor Rowing Championships.
Kellie Harrington, a gold medal boxer, Rhys McClenaghan, a gold medal gymnast, and Fintan McCarthy, a gold medal lightweight rower, could all receive a nomination.
Professional boxer Katie Taylor could earn a nomination and walk away with the award for the fourth time. Taylor was named the RTE Sports Person of the Year in 2012, 2020, and 2022.
Tony Kelly, an Irish hurler, could receive a nomination, too, as the captain helped Clare win the All-Ireland for the first time in 11 years on July 21, 2024, earning them their fifth title win.
