The 81ST Venice Film Festival features the following eight award categories:
- Golden Lion (Leone d’Oro) – presented to the film screened in competition during the prestigious festival.
- Grand Jury Prize – given to the second-best movie at the event.
- Silver Lion (Leone d’Argento) – awarded to the competition’s best director.
- Special Jury Prize – given to the third-best film in the competition.
- Volpi Cup (Coppa Volpi) – comprised of two awards presented to best actor and best actress.
- Golden Osella – the award for the Best Screenplay and Best Technical Contribution.
- Marcello Mastroianni Award – honors an emerging actor or actress.
- Special Lion – award to the director or actor of a film with the best overall work in the competition.
Who Will Receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award
The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a director, actor, or personality who has had a distinguished career in cinema. It isn’t to be confused with the Golden Lion award presented to the best film in the historic competition.
This year, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to American actress Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Working Girl, and Avatar) and Australian film director Peter Weir (Dead Poet’s Society, The Truman Show, and The Way Back).
