This annual award is based on the national Australian radio station known as Triple J and is an annual music listener poll where members of the public are invited to vote for their favorite Australian and alternative musician of the year on a poll which opens two weeks before the new year.

So, even though this is a poll for 2024, the winner will be announced in 2025.

This is no small music award, and it has grown from 500,000 votes in 2004 to 3.2 million in 2019. It has even been referred to as the world’s greatest music democracy.

How is The Winner of The Triple J Hottest Selected?

The process of choosing the winner for the Triple J Hottest 100 is a bit more than a phone vote.

The radio station announces the voting period (usually between December and January), during which time, the station’s listeners can cast their votes for their favorite song of the year. To be eligible, the song must have been released in the year that led up to the poll, and it must have received airplay on the radio station during that year. The voting process usually involves each voter being able to select up to 10 songs, and once the voting period has finished, Triple J tallies the votes electronically to ensure accuracy.

How Can Fans Vote?

Last year, fans were able to vote for their favorite songs that could win the Triple J Hottest 100 via the website or the Triple J app. It is expected that the same process will be used this year.

Each fan can vote for a minimum of one song and a maximum of 10. Remember, the song must have been released between December 1, 2023, and November 30, 2024, to be eligible.

When and Where Does the Award Take Place?

The award for the Triple J Hottest 100 is usually announced at the end of January. Normally, the winner is announced on the last Saturday of the month, so in 2025, that will be January 25.

Who are The Nominees for This Award?

There are no nominees per se, but there are fan favorites that are predicted to be in the top 100.

These include Genesis Owusu with Struggler, G Flip with Drummer, Greta Ray with Positive Spin, Holy Holy with Cellophane, Lastling with Perfect World and Matt Corby with Everything’s Fine.
