Saturday Night Live has entertained audiences for nearly five decades, premiering on October 11, 1975.
Cut to almost 50 years later, and SNL has earned an incredible 84 Primetime Emmy Awards, 305 Emmy Award nominations, six Writers Guild of America Awards, and three Peabody Awards.
As it has aired almost 1,000 episodes, it is one of the longest-running network TV programs in the US and broadcasts in many countries across the world.
The hit show has launched the careers of many accomplished actors, who often started in improvisational comedy groups, such as Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, and Dan Akroyd.

What Date is the SNL 50th Anniversary Special?
The Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special is slated to air on Sunday, February 16, 2025. The live three-hour primetime show will start at 8 PM and finish at 11 PM ET on NBC.
Who Will Host the SNL Special?
The host for the SNL 50th Anniversary Special has yet to be announced, but it has stated it will “welcome stars of past and present to Studio 8H.”
Lorne Michael may invite his Five-Timers Club onto the show, which are celebrities who have hosted the show a minimum of five times. If so, there will be plenty of big names to choose from, such as Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Emma Stone, Alec Baldwin, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Rudd, Bill Murray, Tom Hanks, and many more.
Also, many former SNL stars may return to the iconic stage, such as Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, and Jerry Seinfeld, to name a few.
Of course, SNL’s current stars are likely to appear in the special, including Colin Jost, Michael Che, Chloe Fineman, Mickey Day, Kenan Thompson, Heidi Gardner, and Ego Nwodim.
Will the 50th Anniversary be Lorne Michaels’s Last Show?
It appears Lorne Michael may bow out of Saturday Night Live following its 50th Anniversary Special.
The legendary SNL creator has stated to various media outlets that he will walk away from the show after its anniversary.
In 2023, he told an Entertainment Weekly interviewer, “We’re doing the 50th anniversary in February of ’25, so I will definitely be there for that, and definitely be there until that, and sometime before that we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do.”
If the rumor mill is to be believed, Tina Fey might become his worthy replacement after 50 years on the show.
Michaels doesn’t disagree, stating, “It could easily be Tina Fey, but you know, there are a lot of people who are there now who are also good. Tina’s brilliant and great at everything. She’s a very important person in my life.”
